Bullet history in Medford began with the first shot fired in the city on January 6, 1887. The MEDFORD Rifle Club was formed in response to a concern about firearms being used without proper training and safety. In 1902, the city fathers passed an ordinance establishing a city police department. This department became operational on May 1, 1903. On November 8, 1915, Medford was struck by what is now known as the Portland earthquake. A powerful shock caused extensive damage to buildings and killed at least twelve people and injured many more. Many ofMedford's businesses were destroyed or damaged as a result of the quake. The first health clinic opened in Medford on December 7, 1916. The clinic was originally called the American Hospital but later renamed after Mrs. Elisabeth Farnsworth who provided financial assistance for its construction and operation until her death in 1946. Medford also saw its first professional football team when The Red Devils (later The Oregon Statesmen) joined the Pacific Coast Football League (PCFL) in 1921. The Reds played their home games at United States Bank Stadium from 1921-1924 before moving to General Motors Stadium for the 1925 season; they were then switched to Beaverton Stadium until 1931 when they departed for Providence Park where they remain to this day. Many members of community were directly impacted by World War I including John Medford who lost both his parents while fighting abroad; his wife Olga kept their home intact as a memorial until her death in 1962; Harry Morse served as Mayor from 1915-1920; local high school students took part in active duty through United States Army Air Forces service during World War II (1939-1945); posthumously awarded citations for heroism by then Governor Neil Goldwater following World War II
