The name "Medford" was chosen because it had no other possibilities given that there were only three rivers nearby: the Willamette River which drained into Puget Sound; the Rogue River which flowed through downtown Salem; and the Columbia River which connected these three rivers together near present day Seattle. The first store in Medford opened on December 12th, 1876 by Wm Sorensen with $3 worth of goods from Portland along with candy brought over by Hap Arnold from Tacoma. On October 15th 1880 John Patrick bought shares of Jardine Bros Brewery Ltd., becoming one of early brewers in town In 1914 a group of five men met at Wittenberg Methodist Church under leadership of Reverend Fenton Noyes to form the nucleus for what would become City Hall On November 6th 1916 Mayor Charles Eames called a meeting at City Hall where he proposed creating an all-white municipal board so that black residents could have access to public services like education and voting without fear or discrimination

By 1860, all but two out of thirteen mining towns had closed because of depletion or competition from more recent gold discoveries in California and Nevada along Main Street between Salem and Grants Pass.
