Mcminnville is a town in Benton County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Mcminnville was James McGillivray in 1851. He and his wife, Susan (née Humes), erected a log cabin near the present day intersection of NE 136th and NE 103rd streets on their farm which they named "McGillivray's Camp". They also built some other cabins in their early days. In 1872, John Day purchased land east of what is now Mcminnville from McGillivray and established himself there as a prospector and farmer. By 1876, Day had built several stores, including the old Depot store building still standing today on SW 136th Street across the street from his house. This was one of the first businesses to open in Mcminnville. In 1886, Wm Fenton founded an agricultural fairgrounds located east of what is now Mcminnville that continues to be held each year to this day. The fairgrounds were later renamed Fenton Park after him. In 1907, Atherton Lumber Company founder Rufus Norris bought property northeast of what is now Mcminnville for $1 million dollars making it the largest donation ever made to Benton County by a private individual at that time. Norris developed much of the present day neighborhood around his lumber company buildings on NE 137th Street between SW 136th and SW 133rd Streets which remain extant today as part ofmcMINNVILLE Neighborhood Development Corporation neighborhoodscience museum district
