The early residents built several homes around an old fortuitous location for farming – just south of Mount Hood National Forest's east edge where four lakes converge: Beaver Lake (north), Hatch Lake (southwest), Twin Lakes (southeast) and Upper Hatch Lake (southwest). By 1860 there were over two hundred settlers living in what is today Mcminnville Township and one hundred fifty residents living outside its limits within Wallowa County proper. One reason for this growth was easy access to good land for farming – alluvial sand hills stretched across most of central Wallowa County from Beaver Creek to Devil's Den along rivers such as the Deschutes and Rogue River until some time between 800 BCE and 1800 CE when these soils became crushed by glaciers that swept over much of eastern Oregon during late Pleistocene glaciations 2 million years ago or earlier! In 1865 a schoolhouse was erected at fort Sayers by subscription among local farmers under instruction offered by Reverend Jameson Dibbley from Bendigo,Oregon instructing students in reading languages other than English like French & Spanish (). In 1870 Rev Dibbley donated property adjacent to fort Sayers School building which served as both homeport for navy shipbuilding program during World War II (); currently renamed Naval Air Station Lewis And Clark () Ocean View Dr (&) . A large number of immigrants started arriving into Wallowa County during this period including Italians followed soon by Germans then Japanese American Citizens League members who wanted open country before coming war years 1942-1945
