McClure named his new community after his brother-in-law, George Simpson; however it soon became apparent that there were no water supplies or settlements near enough for such a large population. In 1887 McClure opened up a sawmill on his property which quickly became one of the largest mills in Oregon Lumber production continued to be an important factor during most of Mcminnville’s early days In 1912 ranches were established around present day McLinnan Lake providing additional grazing land for livestock In 1916 a store was built on Main Street (now US 99) which served as both a commercial center and social hub until it burned down in 1969 By 1925 only 10 people lived in McCuminville while Logging operations accounted for over 60%of all business activity However despite these challenges, industry continued to play an important role throughout much of Macuminville’s early history By 1932 only 5 people still lived at McCuminville while lumbering operations represented almost 80%of all business activity Unfortunately this period also saw some significant development outside of town including several major highway projects which devastated many rural communities within eastern Oregon
Mcminnville was founded in 1851 by Captain John J. McNaughton. The town was named after Major General James McPherson, the first lieutenant governor of Oregon. The early residents were farmers and their families. In 1875, the town had a population of about 60 people. The next year, it had a population of 300 people and in 1880, it had a population of 1,500 people. By 1900, the population had grown to 3,000 people. Thetown was destroyed in an fire in 1915.
