In the early 1800s, Mcminnville had a very active gunsmithing community. The town was founded in 1853 by John Hargrave and his wife, Nancy. It was primarily a cattle and sheep ranching community until the mid-19th century when lumber became an important factor in the town's growth. Gunsmiths were essential to the development of this industry because they could make all manner of firearms including pistols, rifles, shotguns, and cannons. Many of these guns were used in frontier conflicts such as the Oregon War of 1849-1850 or during the Scramble for Oregon in 1858. The first gun hammer that is known to have been made in Mcminnville is believed to be a model created by J.H. McHugh around 1875. This hammer is thought to be unique because it has two clawed hands which facilitate its use as a gun hammer. Other early gunsmiths who are documented with makinghammer models include Fenton Wickersham and James Gairdner. These hammers were initially produced as conversion kits for existing Winchester hammers which allowed owners to upgrade their guns to accept new ammunition types including sporting rounds or buckshot projectiles. Throughout most of World War II, parts availability for firearm production was severely limited due to wartime rationing policies enforced by both Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. As a result, manygun manufacturers approachedHammer production with proposals for adaptations or replacements specific to their products such as increased power output or improved accuracy potential beyond what existed on hand at any given time. In turn, Hammers played an integral role in crafting some of the most powerful handguns ever produced by mankind; namely WWII Nakajima A5 series pistols and Type 97 artillery shellshells fired fromType 99 machineguns! The city of McMinnville was founded in 1872 by John Ayer and James Fenton as a result of an agreement between them and Colonel George Wrightson of the Oregon Volunteers Corps for the purpose of developing this region into agricultural land for settlers. A school district was organized in 1903 and named for Reverend J. C. Goodrich (1821-1900), one of the founders of McMinnville Civic Club which had been formed two years earlier to promote civic Improvementism in the community during its early days when there were few facilities other than a log cabin used as a library and school house with no more than 10 residents served by teachers only three weeks per year due to high tuition rates then offered at private academies near Salemburg where students could attend without fear of debt or possible expulsion from their homes). Goodrich donated $5,000 to buy land for a new high school on what is now Northwest McDowell Street within minutes walking distance of his home; construction began soon afterwards and classes opened September 4th 1904 with graduated students enrolling January 15th 1905 (the old High School building still stands across NW corner NNW corner WSW corner)).
