The first Europeans to visit Mcminnville were the surveyors John McLoughlin and David Sibley on their 1841-42 Oregon Trail journey. They named it "Minniville" after a Canadian mountain peak that they saw while exploring the region. A post office was established in 1843, and by 1851 it had become an important stop on the Oregon Trail as well as a center for trade with Indian tribes. The town's growth continued until the early 20th century due to its location at a junction of two major trails, one heading eastward and one heading westward. The first school in Mcminnville was built in 1852 by teacher Cornelius Hettinger and his wife Lucy Ann Greene. In 1870, local farmers organized a school district which included Mcminnville; this led to increased opportunities for education for locals and workers alike. The community's first library opened in 1889; it served as the nucleus of what would become Marylhurst University today. In 1912, during World War I, many people from all over Oregon came to Mcminnville to work in munitions plants near Portland because of wartime shortages of food resources such as corn and soybeans. From 1916-1929, Mcminnville was home to Harry Hohlwein's Pacific Paper Products Company. The company produced newspapers and magazines across Oregon, Washington and northern California. In 1929, Pacific Paper Products merged with United States Steel to become United States Steel Corporation. In 1941, during World War II, United States Steel Corporation moved its manufacturing plants from Oregon to Michigan. Mcminnville lost its livelihood as a paper mill but it regained some aspect of its former glory when United States Steel reopened the plant in 1951 as American Paper Products Company. After American Paper Products closed in 1984, most of the buildings inside the old mill were demolished and replaced with housing units; however, one building still stands: The old McNamara grocery store which is now used for storage space for local farmers' markets
