Mcminnville is a small, rural town in north-central Oregon, located on the banks of the Willamette River. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Mcminnville is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what became Mcminnville was James White in 1859. The community's name may be derived from an incident that took place there in 1865 when John McLaughlin, one of several Mormons who had attracted settlers to the region, was accused of sexual assault by two women. A local jury found McLaughlin not guilty and he left the area for unknown reasons. In 1865, Jens Jensen established a ferry service across the river between Mcminnville and Salem. This allowed entrepreneurs to establish businesses and connect with other parts of Oregon and Washington state during those early days before mail got delivered by wagon or train using land routes crossable only by horse or boat. By 1887, when territorial government boundaries were created followingOregon’s admission into the United States as a state, Mcminnville consisted of just nine homes and three stores along Willamette River roadstead; no commercial enterprises had been established yet. It wasn't until 1907 that agricultural development began to take hold in what would become Mcminnville due to opportunities found on irrigated agriculture land around Salem and Donner Pass through which irrigation water could be transported from southern Idaho via rail to eastern Oregon farmers
