Mcminnville, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem–Keizer–Bend metropolitan area. Mcminnville was founded in 1884 by David and Salmon McNaught. The McNaught brothers were among the first farmers to settle in what is now Mcminnville, and they constructed a log cabin on the edge of what is now their property in 1885. The McNaughts named their cabin "Cedar Grove." They raised cotton and livestock there until 1902 when they became involved with farming stockinage on nearby Mount Hood National Forest. In 1907, they sold Cedar Grove to Hovey and wife Fannie Snively for $2,000. In 1911, Hovey married Ida Belle Elgin (1893-1983), who had been born in Tacoma, Washington to parents who had immigrated from Ireland. Her father owned land near Keizer that he donated to Portland public schools as a public schoolland grant in 1908-09; Northwest School District #1 received title to this land from his estate on July 1, 1909 In 1916-17 while serving as mayor of Salem, John Cavanaugh (1865-1937) purchased 5 acres east of Cedar Grove off Umatilla Road for $600 from Hovey and Fannie Snively; this parcel became known as Bearskin Gulch after being used for grazing sheep over time by Mrs. Snively's ancestors dating back to pioneer days around hereabouts On December 12th 1886 an act was passed by the General Assembly of Oregon authorising Mr David McNaught “to purchase” 640 acres comprising present day counties of Josephine County (northwest corner), Morrow County (southwest corner), Douglas County (east side), Grant County (western side) with appurtenances theretoone thousand nine hundred fifty acres or so lying southwesterly within said Josephine County limits together with all water courses flowing into Siuslaw River thenceforth forevermore known as Big Creek Valley including all future improvements thereon situate according to plan made out by him aforesaid consisting of one house lot containing thirty five feet wide x seventy five feet long x fifteen feet high whereof two stories form a single pile having basement stairs leading down into said house lot also included therein are three lots adjoining each other containing sixty four feet widths x eighty four feet lengthx twenty four inches height each lot including right thereof fronting upon Big Creek Valley whether lying north or south may be determined without restriction hereinbelow but every lot shall include full width alley hereby designated No 6 which extends northerly along Big Creek Valley between Lots Nos 4 & 5
Mcminnville was founded in 1877 by John A. Mcminn, a Scottish immigrant who came to the United States with his family. The town was named for Mcminn's brother, David McMinn. The first post office in the town was established in 1878. In 1907, the town became part of Portland and remained that way until it was annexed into Multnomah County in 1911.
