At its peak during World War II, Lebanon had up to 1,500 residents living in 130 buildings! Today, Lebanon is an agricultural community with a population of about 150 people comprising farmers, ranchers, and small businesses; some are involved in lumbering or fishing; others are involved in agriculture or architecture/engineering services related to infrastructure projects such as roads or bridges. There are also a few dozen residential units scattered throughout the community center and other areas surrounding rural farmland that have been annexed into Lebanon over time.
In 1881, the U.S. Congress passed the Indian Appropriations Act, which authorized the United States to sell land to Native Americans in Oregon. The sale was contingent on the tribes ratifying a treaty with the United States in 1875. In 1886, the tribe ratified the treaty and received $2 million from US taxpayers.
