Lebanon, Oregon is a small town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1887 when two settlers from Lebanon, Pennsylvania combined their land with that of fellow settler George Hutton. The name Lafayette came from one of these settlements and it has stuck ever since. In 1916, local farmers organized a stock drive to raise money for World War I and named their charity "Lafayette Relief Committee". In 1955, an elementary school opened its doors to students from the surrounding rural communities; Lebanon had been designated as an open enrollment district by the state legislature that year. That same year saw the first significant economic development in Lebanon when a water filtration plant was built east of town on what is now State Route 724. Today, Lafayette continues to be a vital community resource with its own shopping center and several businesses including banks and restaurants. A annual fireworks display transforms downtown Lafayette into an entertainment mecca during July 4th weeknight events dubbed "Lafayettefest".
