Lebanon is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Rogue River just north of the Nevada-Oregon border. The population was 914 as of 2010, down from 1,021 in 2000 and 1,041 in 1990.[1] It is part of the Josephine County Micropolitan Statistical Area[2]. The town began as a stagecoach stop on the east side of the Rogue River in 1868. The first store opened in 1869 and by 1870 there were five stores and two hotels. By 1886 there were twelve businesses with a population of 2,500 people. In 1900 there were twenty-one businesses with a population of 4,000 people; by 1990 it had only six businesses with a population under 500 people. In 1970 Lebanon lost its status as an incorporated town when it merged into Josephine County.[3] Lebanon's economic prosperity came during World War II when military aircraft manufactured at nearby Clark Air Force Base produced engines for Boeing B-17 bombers used throughout Japan; these planes also flew into Lebanon to pick up parts needed for their construction while they were being built and then brought back home again without any Sorties or accidents happening to them. This industry led to numerous construction jobs for local residents who would build things such as roads and airports that would be used by all those planes returning home later on (the airport still stands today). In addition to manufacturing employment opportunities during wartime Lebanon also benefited from other industries starting up after the war: plastics company XYZ closed its doors after producing high-quality products for many years until losing market share due to cheaper imported competition; this caused some growth within local economy as companies flocked back to America because American wages became more competitive than those found abroad. Lebanon, Oregon was founded in 1853 by James Fenton and his wife. The first post office in Lebanon, Oregon was established in 1867. The population of Lebanon increased rapidly from its early days as a small outpost to over 2,000 residents by the late 1800s. Many of these settlers came from eastern Kentucky and northern Virginia who had settled near the confluence of the Ohio and Columbia rivers. During this time period, neighboring countries such as Russia, China, and Mexico were vying for control over what was then an agricultural country with few resources. The growth of industry during the 19th century led to a gradual decline in the population of Lebanon until it reached its low point around 1910 when only 500 residents remained.
