Lebanon, Oregon is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Columbia River. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lebanon were fur traders working for the Northwest Company in 1805-06. They named their new town "Oregon" after George Vancouver's exploration of that region in 1798-99, and prudently refrained from naming it "Lebanon." However, by 1827, when General James Kiefer discovered gold near present day Hood River and recommended its location as a potential site for a United States mint, everyone wanted an opportunity to stake their claim to Oregon's new Gold Rush era - even if they only had naming rights! In 1828, United States President Andrew Jackson heard about Gold Country and ordered General David Dixon to explore southward along the Columbia River. Dixon found no gold but he did locate several irrigation ditches which would provide water for farming communities downstream during later years; this discovery may have been one impetus for Congress to create the Willamette Valley Land Grant Act of 1862 which gave select farmers north of Interstate 5 carte blanche to purchase adjacent landholdings east of I-5 from indigenous people as well (the practice continued until approximately 1980). A half century later, when Major Leland Stanford built his railroad through central Oregon looking for a route into California throughsinland Passage (the only time such an attempt was made), he decided on Lebanon as his wintering destination because it was then unoccupied by humans and had excellent geological prospects due to its limestone bedrock dating back millions of years. In addition, there were no viable towns within 350 miles (560 km) of Beirut so Palo Alto became probably America's first planned city! Most importantly however - business interests clamored for easy access to markets downriver while also trying not too closely follow European settlement patterns that favored resources over people. This resulted in various events which helped shape Lebanon today: First came World War II when many Lebanese refugees fled Germany following the Nazi takeover; second was Disastrous floods in 1944 caused by heavy rains over nearby Portland; finally came dramatic growth with ever increasing truck traffic heading into Bend thanks largely to Interstate 5 bypassing everything west of I-5 southward - making Lebanon easily accessible year round! Today we enjoy some beautiful landscapes typical of early 20th century rural America yet remain facing unique challenges unique enough that residents are constantly learning & evolving new strategies/strategies just like our ancestors did centuries ago!

When the U.S. government acquired land east of the river in 1871, it designated Lebanon as part of its effort to create an eastern border with Mexico. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its access to irrigation water and its location within easy reach of other agricultural communities in central Oregon. By 1915, Lebanon had become one of the wealthiest towns in Oregon thanks to its successful trade with nearby Seattle and Tacoma. However, during World War I, Lebanon became a target of German bombing raids because it was situated on enemy territory. While many homes were destroyed, most residents chose to remain underground until it was safe to emerge again after the war ended. In 1945, when Japan surrendered after World War II, Lebanese-American farmer George Hirsch appealed for federal assistance in rebuilding his bombed-out town. After months of negotiation, Hirsch's request led to the creation of the National Highway System and subsequent growth throughout postwar America; while Lebanon remained relatively unaffected by this development (except for a few low-level housing developments), its economy has consequently grown more than any other community within that network.
