Lebanon is a small, rural country located in Western North America. It lies on the border of Syria and Turkey, with its capital and largest city, Beirut, located on the Turkish side. The earliest European explorers came through the region in 1824 when Clifford Perry charted what is now Oregon City while on his way from California to Russia. In 1847, John McLoughlin visited Beirut and named it after Mount Lebanon in present-day Israel. In 1853, George Vancouver explored Vancouver Island off the coast of Oregon Territory and named it after Prince Lebanese (later King George V of Canada). In 1830, following Lewis and Clark’s journey through this same region, Alexander Smith sailed down the Missouri River into what is today Oregon Country. He named two rivers –the Clearwater River and Mount Hood River – after British princesses visiting his home country at that time: Princess Diana of Kent and Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Greece. At approximately this time there were only a handful of European settlements in what is now Northwest North America; most were founded by fur traders during the early 1800s looking for new markets for their products. While many colonists arrived seeking adventure or opportunity rather than agriculture or industry, some did begin to build modest villages or towns near trading posts along these riverside routes before moving on further southward into what became today’s Oregon Territory (Oregon County) in search of new resources or admirers amongst other peoples for their unique culture (easterners generally looked down upon those from western states). One such company was Jervis & McGee who operated a market stall selling produce from local gardens next door to Presbyterian church prior to World War I until prohibition made buying/selling produce illegal(See: Lebanese Market stalls pre- WWI). Lebanon, Oregon is a small town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The community was founded by settlers from Lebanon in 1877 and named after the country that they were fleeing – Syria. The first post office opened in Lebanon on July 9, 1877. By 1940, there were only six residents living there; all had left for other parts of Oregon by then. In 1951, however, the community began to grow again as new construction began along State Route 97 and Interstate 5 south of town. In 1957 it got its own ZIP code and became one of the few communities in Multnomah County to have its own fire department (it still does). The early population growth led to an increase in development costs which caused a decline in business activity over time but also helped support Lebanon's school system which has been operational since 1911. In recent years, redevelopment has started again with housing developments planned for both north and south sides of town as well as a large shopping mall across from Lebanon High School. Lebanese-owned businesses continue to thrive including several restaurants and boutiques located on Main Street near downtown Beirut proper while another plaza is being developed across from I-5 just west of town center ().
Lebanon, Oregon was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1806. The expedition passed through this region on their way to the Pacific Ocean. The town of Lebanon was named for the village they were passing through.
