Lebanon, Oregon was first settled in 1853 as a small Mormon colony. The town of Lebanon was founded on the banks of the Willamette River by James W. Haddad and his wife, Emma. By 1865, the population had grown to 100 settlers and by 1870 it had increased to 300. In 1872, the city of Lebanon was incorporated and by 1875 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1916, a tornado destroyed most of the city with damage totaling $2 million dollars. The community rebuilt quickly and in 1922 annexed part of neighboring Portland. The annexation created a new municipality with its own police department and fire department. In 1949, Lebanon also became home to the University of Oregon – one of America’s first public universities – which helped drive growth in both municipalities over the years.
