By 1920, Lebanon had a population of 1,500 people and boasted two churches, four schools, and an assay office. However, by 1930 it had shrunk to just 350 people due to changing demographics and economic conditions throughout the country. Lebanon experienced its biggest growth period during World War II when more than 1,000 residents moved into the small community from all over the United States to support their military brethren fighting overseas. After the war ended in 1945, things slowed down for Beirut as most residents returned home or left for other towns within Clackamas County. However, some newcomers kept alive the spirit of entrepreneurship which led to business success both locally and statewide after the war’s end. In 1970, Lebanon celebrated its centennial anniversary with a large celebration that drew many people from all over Oregon including government officials as well as representatives from nearby communities such as Grants Pass and Oregon City
