Lake Oswego, Oregon is a community located in the eastern portion of Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 11,859 at the 2010 census. Lake Oswego is home to the University of Portland and was once known as one of the largest lakes in Oregon. The name "Oswego" comes from English and means "place where water meets land." The first Europeans to visit what is now Multnomah County were French traders who went ashore on July 4, 1792 during their exploring trip of la Grande Terre (the Great Land). They called this area "La Belle Pirogue," which means "The beautiful pirogue." In 1824, John McLoughlin founded a ferry service between Portland and Saco on the Willamette River. This allowed people traveling between these two cities to avoid having to go downriver to Milwaukie orPortland. The first post office was established at Oswego in 1827. In 1846 George Morrison built a sawmill on the site that would become his lumber company's main source of income for many years. By 1870, Morrison had also erected a ferry terminal on Duckworth Creek that allowed goods and passengers to be transported across the river from Portland to upstream towns such as Canby and Troutdale. Due to this convenient location and its close proximity to other populated areas outside of Oswego Township proper, it became an important commercial center for both rural residents and urbanites alike during much of 19th century Oregon settlement. During World War II, Osborne's reliance upon timber production caused itto suffer greatly when war-related shortages led prices for logs tumbling below market levels; however, after 1945 Osborne began recovering slowly through diversification into manufacturing with several new mills openings over the next decade or so including one in 1995 which eventually became part of Nike Incorporated's Beaverton campus near downtown Portland while another aluminum plant opened nearby in 2000 which remains operational today as Northwest Aluminum Company LLC.
