Lake Oswego is a small, navigable natural lake located in the Columbia River Gorge region of Oregon. The lake was formed by two mountain ridges that converge to form the area now known as the gorge. The Verde ridge forms the eastern side and North Cascades Ridge forms the western side. The combined ridges create a back-and-forth surface, which creates waves that can be seen from miles away when traveling downriver on the Columbia River. The first Europeans to visit Lake Oswego were fur traders working forthe Northwest Company in 1823. In 1827, John McLoughlin built a log cabin on the east bank of the river near what is today's Olympia. By 1830, McLoughlin had reached Lake Oswego and named it after his home town of Dundee in Scotland. In 1835, Lieutenant David Thompson surveyed and mapped much of present day Columbia Gorge while under command of Captain George Vancouver during his exploration of British Columbia. When news arrived in England of Vancouver's discovery, he decided to explore Canada instead and returned to Britain before reaching Lake Oswego. In 1850, Congress passed an act authorizing Michigan Territorial Governor Lucius Niles to sell land along the banks of the Snake River northward to Puget Sound for $10 million dollars in order to create new states within Washington Territory including Oregon!. Niles chose this location because it wasadjacent to Fort Hall which he thought would be an especially attractive target given its strategic location just across from British Columbia's coastline! After careful consideration, Niles approved McCloughlin's decision to name his new state "Oregon". Oregon became a U S territory on January 3rd ,1859 when legislation was passed entitled "An Act To Establish A Territory Of Oregon" (). On July 5th following a referendum held at Salem () over whether or not Oregon should become part of California (), California acquired all but 2 square miles (5 km2) of Oregoniana (.). This left only about 12 square miles (30 km2) remaining within Oregoniana which was divided into 5 counties: Multnomah County on one side (), Tillamook County on the other side (), Clackamas County onshore (), Hood River County offshore (), and Wallowa County off shore (). With so few acres left unclaimed, McCloughlin donated most or allof these landsto Portland State College for use as campusUTs (now UniversityOfPortland).
