Lake Oswego is a large, salt-caked body of water that spans over 25 miles in length and up to 8 miles wide. It is located in the Portland metropolitan area and covers 1,000 acres. The lake was created by the flooding of the Willamette River after a severe winter storm in 1853. The name Lake Oswego comes from the Oregon language meaning "large body of fresh water." The first residents of this area were Native Americans who hunted and gathered around the now known as the Oso Hillocks. In 1865, settlers arrived on horseback and wagon from Missouri looking for land to settle. They named their new town Lake Oswego because they found an osooak (a type of tree) near where they were going to build their homes. By 1870, development had started around the original osooak settlement with farmers starting to raise chickens, pigs, wheat and other crops along with building log cabins for themselves and their families. By 1880, there were about 40 houses in town with 4 businesses doing business including a post office and two stores. In 1892, when Lake Oswego became part of Portland County, it was renamed Mount Pleasant after Sir John Atherton who donated land for it. With its expanded boundaries came increased development as people began using it more as a fishing ground than just a place to live or work. One such change saw road access being improved making it easier for motorists to get around town without having to go downriver which would have taken time and hassle during high water seasons. In 1978, when Beaver Dam Road was opened between Columbia Boulevard and Alberta Place through heavily forested areas adjoining Lake Oswego proper, much progress had been made since then towards developing what would become today's downtown core of both apartments/condos/hotels/restaurants etc., along with much brownfield redevelopment going on above sea level right next door where some old mills used to be if you could find them! Development continued apace until 2009 when all hell broke loose due largely but not exclusively to developers seeking control over open space adjacent thereto via Measure 97 (the so-called "Lake Oswego Livable Communities" Initiative). That year saw something like 150 buildings built between University Avenue NW (the once commercial heartland) on one side - now home mainly to student housing -and Gresham Street SW which forms what used once amounted almost alone in size (but no longer) an arterial roadway linking downtown cores University AveNW & SW & Gresham StSW; plus jobsites (& numerous parking lots), major infill projects (~100 properties), vast amounts of parkland conversion suitable for residential use only – all within walking distance either way from Minneapolis’s Second City District or Bensonhurst’s Financial District; PLUS severance tax increment financing available via eminent domain should any developer decide they didn’t like how things looked; PLUS streetcars running right past your front door if you wanted them too!?!? All told: A whole lot has changed at “The Meadows” in less than 10 years… Consider yourself duly notified!

Lake Oswego is a census-designated place in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Clatsop County were brought overland by Stagecoach Road from Fort Bridger on the Great Plains in 1847. They named their new land "Oswego" after the largest body of water on their journey and began to plant crops there. In 1850, they built a ferry across the Willamette River that ferried goods and people between Lake Oswego andPortland. In 1853, Congress approved a bill to settle Emigrant Land Claims within Oregon through an act known as the Donation Act. This allowed U.S.-owned property inOregon to be donated for public use with no right of return for those who bought or leased it from federal officials. So many people interested in buying land inClatsop Countysome saw this opportunity and bought tens of thousands of acres (160 km²) near present-day Lake Oswego only to have it sold off several times during the next few years because so few people wanted to live there after having seen all that beautiful country around them back home! In 1856, when word spread about easy access to timber and water resources west of Portland via Stagecoach Road, local farmers decided it was time to build a town on their land where they could sell lumber and other products they produced locally while still enjoying some degree of privacy since they were not subject to taxation by city governments east of downtown! The first meeting held to decide on plans for such a town occurred on February 14th,1856 at which time James Cowlen announced he had been chosen as Mayor! At first planning called for just 10 houses but quickly grew into 30 due to interest from settlers both inside and outside OFWEST OREGON! It didn't take long for locals realized that development would need more than just 10 houses since soon enough businesses became necessary such as grocery stores (the very first store being opened by Elisha Whitehead), post office (built by John Gorman), hotel (opened by Captured Flag Hotel Company member Alfred Pfeffer), livery stable (opened by Jno McDonald), school (opened by Mrs Fenton), Masonic Lodge #2 lodge room (#5) and more!! All these businesses flourished because local farmers could provide plenty of food storage, transportation links with outriver communities such as Corvallis downriver or Medford upriver so people could get jobs inland while still having accessto fresh water resources close at hand!! Many residents also got involved in politics since early elections were held here including James Cowlen who served 3 terms as Mayor before becoming state Treasurer!!! After serving as Treasurer under Governor Joseph Lane between 1887-1889 he ran unsuccessfully for re-election against incumbent Percival Holmes but did manageTo campaign successfully against incumbent Charles Babbage representing CLATSOP COUNTY IN THE ELECTIONS OF 1888!!!! !
The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spanish in 1792. The first Englishman to set foot in Oregon was Captain John McLoughlin in 1824. Oregon became a state of the United States on January 3, 1852.
