The first Europeans to visit Oregon were Spanish traders in 1592. They named the river Quiamar, which means "water way." In 1776, Englishman John Jacob Astor built his first fur business at what is now Portland. He decided to name his new town after himself—John Day—in honor of his father's day, July 4th. However, Astor's heirs didn't want their namesake town called Day because it sounded too much like Philadelphia. So they changed it to Portland after a local farmer who grew corn there. Portland became an important port on the Willamette River because its location allowed goods from Asia and other parts of North America to be shipped downriver easily. The city received its start as a trading post on November 1, 1825 when Captain George Vancouver discovered Burrard Inlet during his exploration of British Columbia. When he reached Portland Harbor he saw a huge bay opening up where he thought there must be land beyond Canada! He named this discovery Land Departure Bay because no one else had found it yet! This led to various conflicts between these farmers and General Douglas" but eventually he allowed them to build their homes on his land." In 1871-1872," when Congress decided that all public lands east of Nevada should be acquired by President Ulysses S Grant," some residents of Waddell moved onto this land so they could have access to it." Eventually these residents formed what is now known as The Federal City Company."" With this act, Oregon acquired most of what is now eastern and southern Oregon as well as most of Washington state.
