Lake Oswego, Oregon is a small town located in the U.S. state of Oregon. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as an agricultural community on the banks of the Willamette River in what is now Douglas County. In 1872, settlers named it after King George Washington's home, Mount Vernon near Georgetown, Virginia. The first post office was established in 1875 and by 1880 Lake Oswego had a population of 100 people. The name change to its current form due to confusion with other towns in Douglas County with similar names that did not start with "Lake" (such as La Grande and Soquel). In 1902, the University of Oregon moved from Eugene to nearby Corvallis and used portions of campus for housing; this caused much acreage around town to be developed for residential use only which resulted in a decline in population until World War II when residents started moving back into their homes and businesses. In 1951, Lake Oswego became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five council members elected at large rather than individual ward meetings like at present; this made it easier for businesses to get permits and fund infrastructure projects without having to worry about running against each other every year for election control. During World War II there were also several air raids on the city which destroyed many homes but noalts killed or injured any civilians; this Experience helped increase public support for incorporation as well as help finance war bonds which helped avoid financial disaster during peacetime times later on when contributions dried up due to central bank regulations prohibiting cross border lending between states during wartimeNOTE: No such prohibition exists today however Lake Oswego still tries hard notto borrow money from outside sources) In 1962–1964 both Seattle Times reporters Jerry Hickey (now deceased) and John Goffman spent time living here while covering news stories about Wall Street reform being announced by then Governor Neil Goldschmidt NOTE: This story has been reprinted multiple times including here

Today, Lake Oswego remains a popular tourist destination for swimming and fishing; among its attractions are several significant buildings from various periods in its history including the Phelps House (built in 1872), Douglas Park (built 1909), and Eastern Washington Building (1906).

The first European to explore what is now Lake Oswego was Captain George Vancouver on his HMS " Discovery" in 1792. He named it after the Holland's Bay area near Amsterdam where he had been shipwrecked and lost his boats. Oswego became a town on February 3, 1853 when it was chosen as the site for a new county seat by an act of Congress under US President James K. Polk. The original courthouse and jail were built in 1854-5 by local developers, including John Funk and David Farnsworth. The main economic function of the town until about 1920 was agriculture; since then, many businesses have moved into the downtown area such as restaurants, bars, and stores that service the surrounding community with its library, park system and schools
