Lake Oswego is a city in Oregon, United States. The population was 24,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clackamas County and the largest city in Clackamas County by area. The incorporated towns of Lake Oswego, Seaside, Grayslake and Happy Valley are within the City of Oswego limits. The first people to live in what is now Lake Oswego were Native Americans who hunted and trapped around the lake for food. In 1851, James Irvine built a cabin on the east side of the lake and named it Irvine Station after himself and his father-in-law John Irvine (1786–1868). The village grew around Irvine Station until it was destroyed by a flood in 1872. When new land was donated to Clackamas County for development, planners decided to build an artificial island off campus so that students could take swimming lessons without fear of flooding during rainy days or floods when classes were suspended due to rainstorms. This plan backfired because drinking water from nearby springs would become available only during dry times which made swimming impossible during most weeks. Consequently, students had to use private wells or bring their own canteens with them when they went outside campus for swimming lessons. In 1875, two men – George Wright and Frank Bennett – built a cabin on an island near present day Lakeside Drive as part of a business venture called Wright & Bennett Lumber Company which traded logs with Oregon traders for goods like cloth and furniture needed by settlers moving westward across America's Great Plains. In 1888, Wright & Bennett sold their logging rights to Ayer Dam which formed much of what is now University Avenue in downtown Oswego Township while also spawning several other businesses including Wagon Wheel Hardware Store on SW 1st Street between Murray Boulevard/Avenue Ewbank Drive NW and NE 7th Avenue NW; H&R Block on NE 5th Street between Capitol Hill Road SE and NE 82nd Avenue NW; JW Marriott hotel on SW corner 3rd Ave SE/SW corner Pine Way SE; Anheuser Busch Brewery Brewing Co.; Tuckernut Growers Cooperative; Pacific Northwest Glass Works Inc.; First Data Corporation (FDC) (); US Airways Airlines (). However, little success resulted from these efforts as well as investment being poured into building infrastructure such as roads (), sewers () From 1889 until 1971 there was only one bank located inside city limits: The Peoples National Bank which closed its doors afterBankruptcy (). After reopening under new ownership in 1974 (), Peoples National Bank became one of four founding members () of The Chamber Of Commerce Of NorthernOregon ().
