It has a temperate climate with average precipitation ranging from around 8 inches to 18 inches per year. The name "Oswego" comes from the Ojibwa word "hōsīgwā" meaning "big body." The name Multnomah comes from the Chinook word "munḏ̓a" meaning “multitude” or “many people.” Both names were given because of their great size- Oswego is larger than Multnomah by about 60 acres and Multnomah is larger than any other river in Oregon. The first Europeans to visit Lake Oswego were fur traders who named it after Vice President George Washington's Mount Vernon in 1792. In 1827, the Umpqua Indians began trading with British merchants and discovered this new land which they called The Willamette Valley because of the numerous willows that grew thereabouts. They named it Lake Oswego after General James Kapp's Headquarters at Fort Butte on Puget Sound where he led an army during the Oregon Revolution in 1846. General Kapp's headquarters moved to present day Salem in 1850, but his headquarters still remains at Fort Butte today. In 1870, gold was discovered in what is now Kingman County and this led to a large influx of settlers into central Oregon as prospectors started arrive for strikes near Bend, Oregon. Over time,the name 'Lake Oswego' gradually came to be used for alluvial deposits surrounding the lake including those east of its borders- such as Goldendale onMultnomah River
