The first rifle cartridge made in Oregon was the .30-06 Springfield. This cartridge used a round called the “ball” that was about 2 inches long and had a small hole in it so it could be fired by firing squads from fortifications during the American Revolution. The first rounds of ammunition for rifles were shot out of cannons on Fort Lewis during the war with Mexico. In 1847, General John C. Fremont set up an arsenal at Fort Vancouver on Willamette River to produce munitions for his army and navy. This armory produced arms including cannon, rifles, pistols, grenades, rockets and mortar shells. Ammunition production continued until 1862 when Fort Douglas was completed along the Columbia River making Lake Oswego one of the most important military posts on the Pacific Northwest coast. In 1865, Captain James Waddell founded what is now known as Waddell Bullets Manufacturing Company here in Lake Oswego after purchasing a patent for a new type of bullet designed to improve fire control on artillery pieces. The company prospered until World War I when demand for artillery ammunition decreased due to technological advances such as machine guns and tanks. In 1853, Congress created Oregon Territory and named it for George Washington, Jr., 3rd President of the United States. Oregon became a state in 1859 and by 1862 had built several dams on Willamette River to generate power for irrigation purposes. On July 4, 1863, General William Rosecrans put an end to that practice with his raid on Fort Vancouver which destroyed all but one dam and extensively damaged other infrastructure. In 1865, Oregon became a U.S territory once again when Mexico ceded its northern border to become part of America through Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo. At this time, most people living around Lake Oswego thought that it would be renamed La Isla de la Luna because California was gaining more space at that time (the U.S.-Mexico boundary was eventually moved east). However, no such proposal was made and so it remained known as Lake Oswego until 1959 when it received its present name from then-Governor Neil Goldthwait O'Malley's proclamation designating it as part of Multnomah County - making it one of only two counties in Oregon (along with Bend) subject to county government within a state boundaries! It wasn't until 1978 when voters approved Measure 97 which designated about 50 percent of eastern Multnomah County as parkland along with portions of downtown Portland including Pioneer Square - making Lake OsweGO essentially a city-owned parkLAND! That same year saw construction begin on what would become City Hall Park northwest corner SE steps from Willamette Street - becomingPortland's largest public park! Today, much remains unchanged about this important community history: There are frequent events throughout summer involving reenactment or recreationsof pioneer life; large annual music festivals; stoneware pottery exhibitions; educational programs offered by local organizations including OSU's School Museum ;and Historic Preservation Services provide assistance with reviewing properties for potential preservation

The first white people in Oregon arrived in 1846, when Captain James Cook sailed northward from England on his ill-fated HMS Beagle. He and his men discovered the Oregon Coast and named it for King George III of Great Britain. The first permanent U.S. settlers in Oregon were families from East Tennessee who moved west during the 1830s. In 1845, Congress granted a land grant to John Croad, who founded the town of Corvallis on the Columbia River. The area around Corvallis became known as Central Oregon because it was where most of the early farmers and traders settled.
