Lake Oswego is a census-designated place in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the banks of the Columbia River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 20,898. The unincorporated community of Clyde lies adjacent to Lake Oswego. The area now comprising Lake Oswego and much of what is today suburban Portland was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century as part of the Oso Census tract. The first European to see and explore what would become Oregon was Captain George Vancouver, who discovered Puget Sound in 1792 while exploring British Columbia for Britain. In 1807, when Oregon became a U.S. state, it included all present-day Oregon except for parts of western Washington Territory that formed part of Mexico's ceded territory during Mexican independence from Spain. In 1850, when most of eastern Oregon became part of new Utah Territory under President James Kossuth's efforts to create an African American-majority slaveholding state within America following his successful unsuccessful campaign for the Ulysses S Grant presidency—a campaign that helped make him president—Oregon included part or all of what are now Lake Oswego and Clyde.[1] Oregon State Route 99 passes through both townships along its length; it enters Clyde at exit 3A (the old main road) southeastof town and leaves it at exit 5A (the old bypass road). SR 99 heads eastward from Lake Oswego past Daylesford before intersecting Interstate 5 near Hood River and ending at an interchange with I-5 southbound and US 101 northbound near Corvallis.[2] In recent years there has been some effort to connect SR 99 with I-5 via a bypass directly into downtown Portland via Pandalus Street which would have eliminated some travel time between tasks but this project remains indefinitely deferred due to funding shortfalls[3][4]. As early as 1847 people were living near where modern day lake osway is located
Lake Oswego was a natural reservoir created by the building of the Columbia River Gorge Bridge in 1907. The dam was completed in 1908, and it served as the primary storage and irrigation facility for the agricultural areas around Portland. In 1941, the military used Lake Oswego to store munitions during World War II. The dam was finally removed in 1972, and the water that once filled it has been diverted into reservoirs throughout Oregon.
