La Grande is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Snake River Plain about sixty miles northeast of Portland. The population was 5,706 at the 2010 census; 3,556 of those lived in La Grande and its surrounding communities of North Bend, Canby, and Slocum. The community is part of the La Grande-Auburn Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now La Grande was Captain James Cook on his HMS Endeavour in 1792. Upon his return from Tahiti he mentioned that he had seen a great country "behind us", which led him to believe that he had been where Vancouver Island now stands. In 1805 John Cranch founded the town of La Grande on land grant given him by Chief Joseph Leslie near present day Canby.. In 1824 David Hale explored and named la grande after Pierre de la Salle who explored southwestern Canada some years earlier while exploring for his father Louisbourg under Governor George Vancouver. A post office called "Laguna" was established at what is now north end of town in 1827, but it was discontinued in 1861 because it had no freight or passengers transportation available nearby; mail service began between Portland and La Grande via Northwest Railroad in 1881. In 1860 Pemberton became headquarter for all railroad activities within Oregon due to increasing railroad investment Across much of northwestern United States railroads were built through towns such as Lewiston (1901), Corvallis (1906), Hood River (1907), McMinnville (1920) and Troutdale (1926). By 1870 there were over 1,000 people living in LaGrande with an average population density over 100 persons per square mile according to USGS land use data from 1865-1970 inclusive). Due to growing industry & trade along I-5 as well as increasing residential development around Puget Sound & Willamette Valley riverside regions many fishermen migrated into central Oregon during this time period including early residents Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin(1893-1981) & Dick Bowman(billed 1907-1980). Fishing tournaments were held annually throughout much of this period attracting participants from far flung rural areas both east coast & west coast America alike overwhelming local fishing ponds which often became impassable during high water periods making boating an option again becoming popular among locals during these times especially as ice conditions slowly improved through late summer/early fall usually allowing access year round most months creating ideal habitat for walleyes! As oil exploration increased during this time period new rigs started appearing offshore along our river valleys providing excellent hunting opportunity for nearby salmonid game species swimmer also becoming increasingly interested in their habits leading to more commercial fisheries being developed paralleling increases rates & varietyof shellfish catches
