In 1966-1967), following Measure O's passage into law that allowed for more open space within city limits (a move that would later be recognized as one of the most important moments inLa Grande's history), something began to change within La Grande; people started taking notice of their surroundings again and started complaining about how congested their streets became at night without any solutions being put in place! Two years later in 1968 , Mayor John Ahern announced his vision for makingLa Grande "the most bicycle friendly city" in Oregon . This announcement saw a boost in awareness towards improving bike infrastructure within La Grande while also putting pressure on city officials to come up with solutions that would help improve pedestrian safety on mainstreet corridors at night

La Grande is a small town in Oregon. It is located on the divide between the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, about 20 miles east of Salem. The population was 3,462 at the 2010 census. La Grande is the most populous community in Clackamas County. The first European to visit what is now La Grande was Jedediah Smith in 1811. He noted waterfalls and rapids on the river, but did not find any villages or people. In 1826, surveyor George Simpson visited La Grande and found that it had a population of 507 residents; however, he never traveled to the town because his job required him to travel around Clackamas County instead of staying put for more than a week at a time like other surveying officers. In 1837, John Sisler explored the area from his farm near present-day Albany to Umatilla Falls before going downriver to testify regarding Spanish claims along the Rogue River region. This event helped spur settlement in this part of Oregon by providing an opportunity for non-native Americans to land and start businesses without running into problems with Native Americans who were already settled there. In 1840, General Joseph Lane passed through La Grande on his way southward on his march across America towards Mexico City; he stopped at one of the many Indian settlements along his route and ordered all Indian inhabitants living within two miles of him killed or driven out into open country where they would be unable to return ever again without obtaining U.S.-issued licenses from agent James Gifford as well as payments totaling $2 per head specified annually). In 1871, La Grande was founded by John C. Fremont and his brother George on the site of the present-day city. The town grew rapidly, becoming a major transportation and business center for the region. In 1898, La Grande became an incorporated town with a mayor and a council system. By 1920, it had a population of over 25,000 people. In 1930, La Grande was renamed Portland after Mayor James Pendergast of Portland, Oregon.
