In 1907, it became home to Pacific Northwest Electric Company’s (PNE) largest electric line when it was extended from Portland to West Bend throughLa Grande and Douglas City. This new line helped spur development withinLa Grande itself as well as into adjoining communities such as Pioneer Valley and Wishram Hills. Throughout its history, La Grande has been a center for commerce and culture; many famous people have made their homes here including author Jules Verne (whose 1869 novel “Around The World In 80 Days” was published here), actor/director Cecil Bickham Jr., musician Ray Charles (whose 1928 song “I Can't Quit You Baby” was recorded here), pitcher Nolan Ryan (who spent parts of his teenage years living here), singer Loretta Lynn (of rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd), journalist Bob Woodward (author of bestsellers such as Watergate: A History), author Marilynne Robinson (!), sculptor Norma Sheehan (!).
Oregon was one of the first states to be admitted to the United States of America. The area that is now Oregon was part of California before it became an independent country. The area now known as Oregon was included in the Indiana Territory when it was organized on November 17, 1825. On January 15, 1847, the name of this territory was changed from Territorial District of California to Oregon Territory. On February 14, 1850, a bill was introduced in Congress that would have given all of Nevada and Arizona to Oregon. However, this bill did not pass due to strong opposition from Mexico. In 1851, a bill were introduced in Congress that would give all of Idaho and most of Montana to Oregon also. However, this bill also did not pass due to strong opposition from Mexico.
