The company built a sawmill and store there and started trading goods with Portland merchants. In 1881, they erected a large wooden frame courthouse which served as court house until 1916 when it was replaced by the current building. In 1898 A&P Store opened in La Grande which became one of Oregon's biggest grocery stores. It closed its doors in 2002 but its employees remained open at their former location until 2004 when they moved into two new buildings next door to First Pacific Bank until that bank's closure made them unable to continue operations there either. In 2006 A&P reopened under new ownership as an e-commerce store known as AmazonBasics with over 400 items available online only from their store while also carrying local produce from their farmstand inside the store
