In 1891, the La Grande Rifle andshotgun Club was founded. In 1903, the La Grande Rifle and Shotgun Club organized a rifle range which still exists today. From 1905-1909, the club built a clubhouse on what is now the east side of town. In 1912, the club formed its own golf course. The La Grande Rifle & Shotgun Club continues to exist to this day and conducts activities such as muzzleloading competitions, skeet shooting, trap shoots and hunting events throughout the year.
La Grande is a city in Oregon, United States. The population was 17,527 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Butte County and the second most populous city within Oregon after Portland. La Grande has been home to many people of Native American descent for centuries, and its economy is dominated by agriculture and natural resources. The first European settlers in what is now La Grande began arriving in 1847, when prospectors discovered gold near present-day La Grande. By 1853, some 705 people lived in the area around current-day downtown La Grande. In 1865, evidence of an extinct volcano named Mount St Helens led to the town’s name being changed from “Lake George” to “Mount St Helensburgh” due to fears that it would be renamed again if it were not found to be real. In 1885–86, local farmers erected a large wooden stockade around their small town as part of a strategy to protect their crops from raiding by Mexicans who had recently arrived in California looking for goldfields. The first store opened on May 3, 1886, and soon afterwards an railroad was constructed through La Grande giving residents access to jobs in larger cities like Portland and Salem. over time however there became an increasingly strong connection between downtown LaGrande and eastern Oregon's growing agricultural center with businesses such as grocery stores opening up all over town along with professional sports teams (the original Mountaineers) playing their games at various locations including the old high school gymnasium which still stands today used by both High School (now Beaverton HS) Athletic Teams as well as City Council meetings until 1978 when new facilities were built on land donated by Mayor Art Hallman just north of downtown which remains currently active part time office/sports complex housing 2 jail cells Community Resource Center library two dozen homes Senior Citizens Village & Daycare

In 1855, John S. Cook, a mining and prospecting company executive in the La Grande area, decided to make a new claim in what is now Oregon. He named his new land "La Grande." The first permanent residents of La Grande were men from Illinois who had come to the area for gold mining and prospecting. They built their homes around a small creek that flows through the town today. In 1861, Captain J.T. Haig established a post near present-day La Grande on the Columbia River as part of United States Army efforts to keep travelers and traders away from Mexican holdings in central Oregon. The town was abandoned by 1875 because of railroad construction between Portland and the Central Valley Railroad. A few buildings remain in La Grande today: the Post Office (1861), Haig's Store (1871-72), Schoolhouse #1 (1875), and Schoolhouse #2 (1901).
