In 1934, Norma Kopp founded The Cottage Cheese Factory which became one of the largest cheese factories in the Pacific Northwest; it operated until 1990s. The first shotgun manufactured in La Grande was an 8-gauge pump action calledthe "Oregon Gun Hammer." It was designed by Edward Jenson and produced beginning in 1881 for use by mounted police officers with shotguns that were not yet outlawed under state law at that time (these guns were known as "mounted revolvers"). He built the Fremont Hotel on the east side of the La Grande River. The hotel served as a stop on stagecoach trips from Portland to Bend and Seattle. In 1878, Captain George Ainsworth established an independent post office at the junction of Umatilla Road and State Route 126 northwest of present-day La Grande. Ainsworth named his post office after General James Klamath who had conquered much of California during the Mexican–American War (1851-1853). In 1886, J. P Bartholomew started a small flour mill near present-day downtown La Grande with six acres (2 ha) of land along Umatilla Road and five miles (8 km) of water rights from Clearwater Creek.. By 1890, Bartholomew's mill had produced over 100 metric tons (1,500 lb) of flour per day and he employed seventy farmers and boys to work his mills; by 1893, his mill had produced over 300 metric tons (4,000 lb) per day and he employed one hundred farmers and boys to work his mills plus eighty men for storage purposes In 1902 Jardine & Co., Ltd., a Canadian general store chain operating out of Ashington Mines south of Vancouver City Limits in British Columbia began selling goods bearing the Oregon brand at their stores across America; this led to increased traffic through Ashington Mines which became so congested that management began selling tickets allowing customers to leave without buying anything until they reached their destination In 1916 Ladd Bros., Incorporated organized as an agricultural hardware store with twelve employees located at 908 Main Street NW between Astoria Avenue NE and 20th Street NE; by 1922 Ladd Bros.' store had grown into one thousand three hundred square feet (100 m²), becoming one of America's largest farm implement dealers In 1924 businessman Harry Ewing moved into town from Corvallis when he bought twenty acres (10 ha) northward along Umatilla Road from Wm Hutton; Ewing hired local man Jedediah Smith as manager By 1928 Ewing's ranch encompassed sixty-eight acres (25 ha), including thirty-six acres (12 ha) lying within town limits
