La Grande, Oregon is a town in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. La Grande is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European explorers to reach what is now La Grande were Jedediah Smith and David Thompson in 1807 and 1808 respectively. They named it Fort Vancouver after their temporary headquarters on the Columbia River near present day Portland. In 1824, La Grande was founded as a trading post by John C. Fremont and his party of forty soldiers under Major George Armstrong Custer following their journey up the Snake River from the Great Lakes region. It became an important port for fur trade because of its location at the confluence of two major rivers with high water levels that allowed ships to navigate easily through rapids and tidal pools. In 1861, La Grande was acquired by Ulysses S. Grant who renamed it Fort McNair after General James McNair (1814–1898), commanding general of Union forces during the American Civil War who had helped lead an army westward from Missouri to retake California in 1862 and then played a leading role in defeating Confederate forces at Bull Run in November 1861. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945, fortification work began here to prepare for occupation by American troops which began on October 17 when Japanese units entered la Grande from nearby Junction City without resistance; this event marked the end of World War II in Northwest America. On January 1st 1948 La Grande organized as a village under current town boundaries following passage of Act No.(2) Of 1946

La Grande, Oregon was founded in 1868 by the Latter Day Saints as a ranch and farming community located on the Willamette River. The community quickly grew; within five years, La Grande had a population of 1,500. In 1870, La Grande became the first town in Oregon to be incorporated. The town experienced rapid growth and progress during its early years; throughout 1871-72, La Grande erected a large brick courthouse and jail, laid out streets and built infrastructure such as waterworks and schools. However, due to the Panic of 1893 which ravaged Northwest America, La Grande's development slowed down significantly. By 1895-96, only 10% of the town's original buildings still remained standing. However, despite these tough times, La Grande continued to grow and prosper; after 1895 it became one of Oregon's leading agricultural centers. In 1922-23 when La Grande was designated as an International City under United Nations auspices (later renamed Portland), its growth continued unabated. Over the next several decadesLa Grande transitioned from a small farming community into a center for industry and commerce within Oregon and beyond. Today, many historic landmarks remain in operation including: an extant shopping mall (the old Macy's building), an opera house (the former Stanley Theatre), two universities - Clark State University in Vancouver Hills andOregon State University at Corvallis - as well as dozens of other businesses., numerous churches/mosques (including one that still stands today), numerous agricultural fields with thousands of acres irrigated with effluent from nearby steel mills,, three missions - St Joseph's Catholic Church (founded 1865), First Baptist Church (1892)and Second Christian Templeual School District No 2 & 3Awhich opened in 1907are all still operational or have undergone renovations or additions over time
La Grande is located in the Columbia River Gorge National Park and was founded in 1851 by pioneers. The town was named for the Larger Lake that stretched from its location to the edge of the park. La Grande grew rapidly during Oregon's gold rush years and by 1870, had a population of 1,500 residents. It soon became a center for commerce with lumber, meat, potatoes, flour and other goods coming in from outside the area. La Grande experienced some growth during World War II as military personnel stationed there produced much of Oregon's wartime munitions.
