It is part of the Portland metropolitan area and is home to Klamath Falls State Park. The first permanent settler in Klavier County was James Hutton in 1847. By 1851, there were 8 settlers living in what is now Klavier County. The first post office was established in 1889 and the first store opened in 1893. In 1903, the county seat moved from Grants Pass to Klamath Falls. Klausmeier Dam on the Snake River formed by damming the Clearwater River created floodplains that became agricultural land for settlement beginning about 1910. The construction of additional dams along the Snake River caused more flooding and social unrest which led to a rapid growth of local industries such as lumber, agriculture and brewing during World War I and II; however, these industries gradually died out after post-war economic restructurings eliminated many jobs within those sectors. The town of Klamath Falls developed around Camp Casey (later known as Casey Lake), one of two military camps operated by US forces during World War II located near present day Klamath Falls City limits on both banks of the Clearwater River.. Camp Casey held displaced persons from Japan following their bombing raids on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6-8 1945; it also housed servicemen who had been transferred from other parts of Oregon or Washington state following warfighting operations over that weekend.many houses built at this time remain standing today as ghost towns due to vandalism or arson
