Klamath Falls, Oregon is a town in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The community began as a small log settlement on the banks of the Klamath River in 1868. After a brief boom during World War II when wartime production increased demand for lumber from Klamath Falls, the town slowly declined until it reached its current size in the late 1970s. The first settlers of what would become Klamath Falls were people from British Columbia who had arrived on horseback traveling upriver to prospect for gold and coal near present-day Bend and Yreka. In 1868, James Irvine and his brother founded a log cabin on the banks of the Klamath River after findingered rafts overland to their new home. From this cabin tree-ripened fruit began to be shipped downriver to market by boatload every fall. In 1870, John Witherspoon set up shop in what is now downtown with three white cows he’d bought from a rancher east of Butte Creek Canyon. By 1872 Witherspoon had outgrown his location and relocated his business upstream along Clearwater Creek which led then into Klamath County where he met Peter Henschel who ran an sawmill about two miles (3 km) east of downtown on Umatilla Lake which became one of early flour mills in Oregon. Henschel also supplied goods to local miners through trade; among other items were corduroys made from sheepskin that were both waterproof and tough enough to resist wear and tear outdoors. In 1875 Patrick Collins opened a store next door at 5th & Alder Streets; it was later known as Jäger’s grocery store because owner John Jager sold goods direct to customers rather than through merchants like himself who took discounts off retail prices for carrying government-supplied merchandise during times of war or peace). One factory worker noted how "the smell never failed to reach us" even though they lived closeby "When we went outside our door all day long there would be this cloud cover over Portland and you could just see these flames going up out there [at Willamson Air Force Base] And we knew that somebody was manufacturing munitions." Ruins still viewable today include: “Willamson Army Ammunition Plant No 4 – This plant manufactured incendiary shells used against Japan ". Other facilities Destroyed during WWII include: “Oregon Arsenal Complex – This complex produced ammunition for American troops fighting against Japan ".
