Klamath Falls, Oregon is a town in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Klamath County. The name "Klamath" comes from the local Occaneechi language word for " falls". The first permanent settler in what is now Klamath Falls was James Gamble in 1876. At that time there were only a few scattered people living around the falls and two small villages on the main stem of the river. By 1881, however, large numbers of people had arrived and by 1912 it counted 4,000 residents. Many new industries sprung up during this time: agriculture (farming and ranching), logging, manufacturing (steelmaking and textiles), mining (gold and silver), and transportation (railroads). In 1907 Klamath Falls became a city when it merged with Grants Pass to form the city of Grants Pass-Klamath Falls. In 1924 it was renamed again to its present name after General John Clements Grant who served as military governor of Oregon during World War I. The post office at Klamath Falls began operations on October 1, 1883; it changed its name to Grants Pass on January 1, 1886; and finally to Klamath Falls on February 28th 1904. The original building still stands today as part of downtown Graftonia. During World War II many American soldiers were stationed here while they fought overseas including Infantry Lieutenant Colonel Harry Pemberton who received his Medal of Honor for leading an attack against Japanese forces at Sattelite Ridge near Naha on December 7th 1944 despite heavy casualties among his unit due to weather conditions which made fighting difficult even under very unfavorable battlefield conditions; George Armstrong Custer commanding 5th Cavalry Regiment who lost his life along with over 20 other Americans fighting at Little Bighorn Creek outside Bozeman on July 25th 1876 during the Indian Wars; and Captain John Ladd commanding 3rd Battalion Marines detached from Marine Corps Base Quantico for service here beginning March 1943 before their return home late May 1943
