The next year, 1852, Captain John Cushing arrived at Fort Nez Perce with his army and explored this portion of eastern Oregon Territory which included much of present-day Clatsop County except for what is now Klamath Falls

Klamath Falls, Oregon is a small town in the lower Klamath River Valley of the U.S. state of Oregon. The population was 5,842 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Klamath County and part of the Eugene metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oregon were three fur traders from Vancouver Island in British Columbia who passed through in 1811–12 on their way to trade with Russia and China. They named their river's main tributary, the Klamath, after Governor George Forster of New South Wales (Australia). The town was founded by citizens of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia in 1868 as a result of an agreement between then-Governor John Cushing and Andrew Stevenson; both men were seeking land grants that would provide an outlet for surplus grain grown east of Portland. Because it lay on federal land—the so-called "Oregon Strip"—the town was not subject to state taxes until 1907 when a local option law was passed by Congress granting voting rights to towns within its borders. In 1925, Klamath Falls became part of Eugene when that city became the State capital of Oregon; however, it remained its municipal government until 1959 when it became under county jurisdiction again following a judicial decision rendered in that year's United States Supreme Court case Smith v. Richardson (5 U.S.) According to the 2000 census, there were 5,842 people living in Klamath Falls proper and 2,939 residents residing outside the incorporated areas known as "East" or "West" Klamath Falls and Union Beach respectively (this includes all unincorporated tribal lands located within either town limits). Of those living inside city limits only 1 percent are considered day-time commuters while over 60 percent work outside the city Limits: majority are employed within five miles radius being farmers/ ranchers (44%), builders (24%), technical professionals such as engineers/ scientists (20%), health care providers such as nurses/ doctors (17%) or teachers/achers (15%).
