Klamath Falls, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. It is located about 20 miles south ofPortland and 10 miles north of Salem. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. Klamath Falls is made up of two villages: Klamath Lake and Mukilteo. The first people to live in this area were the Shoshone who established a village on the banks of the Klamath River in 1848. In 1853, another group of Shoshone settled near present day Mukilteo and began gardening crops and raising livestock there. By 1870, most of what is now Klamath Falls had been developed with goods stores, hotels, churches, schools, mills and other businesses clustering around downtown. In 1912-1913 an irrigation system was constructed through which much of eastern Oregon was irrigated for agriculture; thus creating a demand for lumber from the surrounding forests that were being cut down for fuelwood (a necessity for lighting gas lamps). Lumber sales exploded as more homes were built and new streets were laid out to accommodate these large quantities of wood delivered by wagon trains from logging camps along the Willamette River valley floor. As early as 1925 there were reports that entire blocks between 2nd Street NW and 4th Street NW had been burned down by vandals during prohibition era brawls between prohibitionists and their opponents who believed that such fires served as advertising space for local bootlegging operations At various points during its history Klamath Falls has seen – but never achieved – :(population) :-(
