The first Europeans to visit what is nowMultnomah County were French voyageurs who passed through during their expedition overland from Canada in 1607–1608. A Jesuit mission was established at Klamath Falls in 1769 by Father François-Marie Laval; it closed in 1806 because of Indian hostility. The name "Klamath" was given to the river by Captain George Vancouver on hisvoyage around Cape Horn in 1792 while exploring that part of North America for England. In 1834 Governor John McLoughlin designated part of Multnomah County as Columbia District, including present-dayKlamath Falls and its environs; however, no permanent settlement ever grew up there until after World War II when a number of farmers began arriving to cultivate rice and other crops near Portland proper. In 1945 local officials decided that Klamath Falls should be an incorporated municipality with its own government separate from that of Portland; this idea gained support from many people who felt that their town could improve its economy more effectively if it had its own resources and infrastructure available exclusively to it rather than relying onPortland's donations or assistance.
