The Klamath Falls Massacre took place on October 15, 1876, when five men were shot and killed by a group of Native Americans near the town of Klamath Falls. The shootings occurred during the Indian Wars in Oregon.
When first Europeans arrived in Oregon in the early 1800s, they were greatly surprised to find a place so vast and empty. The Klamath River was the only water source for many miles around, and the land was covered with thick forest. There was little animal life, and even fewer people. But over time, as Oregon became more populated, the Klamath Falls began to grow. In 1824, Jedediah Smith and his party of men journeyed downriver from California to wagonload supplies nearpresent-day Salem. They were followed by two other groups of travelers—the Nez Perce and the Umpqua Indians—and soon there were dozens of settlers living in what is now Klamath Falls. The first European settler in what is now Klamath Falls was John Day. He built a cabin on the banks of the river in 1826. Over time, others joined Day and started horticulture and livestock farming at various sites along the river. By 1830, there were 10 or 12 people living in what is now Klamath Falls proper. As early as 1836, a group of Latter-day Saints had begun traveling upriver to trade goods with Native Americans at nearby Soquel Lake (then called Rogue River). When Brigham Young arrived at Fort Hall on January 24 that year aftertraveling for weeks across country via horseback from Nauvoo City (now Chicago), he also began trading goods with local natives.—[1]

Klamath Falls, Oregon is a small town in the Siskiyou Mountains of central Oregon. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bend–Klamath National Forest and is located on the Klamath River. The first people to live in what is now Klamath Falls were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near present day Klamath Falls. They built their homes from logs that they collected from the river. The first European to visit Klamath Falls was Captain George Vancouver on his HMS Discovery when he explored southern Oregon in 1792. He named two rivers, the Klamath and Snake, after these natives who he thought resembled kangaroos or wombats. In 1836, John Cushing established a fur trading post at current-day Klamath Falls while exploring for new land to ranch in Central Oregon. At this time, fur traders trade furs with local tribes such as the Shoshone and Umpqua for food, goods, and services such as transportation across difficult mountain ranges. In 1839–40 Gail Borden organized a wagon train of 20 women and 10 children during her attempt to cross country from California through Oregon into Nevada Territory for mining gold near Mount Scott; however, one woman died along the way (Borden later became an American actress). This event marked the beginning of wagon trains traveling through Oregon Country which would continue until railroads arrived in 1900. In 1853 Congress authorized creation of a road linking Rogue Valley with Puget Sound via central Washington State; this road eventually became known as Interstate 5 Alternate. In 1862 Captains David Grinnell and Nathaniel Gray mapped out what is now centralOregon Route 66; this route linked Salem with Portland before crossing over into California County near modern-day Roseburg before terminating at Coquille Lake east of town today’s Goldendale Dam site where Grinnell established his sheep farm in 1865 In 1865 Augustus Earle started ranching around present-day Butte Creek outside present-day Florence By 1870 most of easternOregon had been acquired by US forces during General Sherman’s push southward into Mexico After years of surveying and planning by members of both state legislatures Lewis & Clark Expedition set out acrosswestcoastofnorthwesternusafederalistAmericaonJuly41847to findunglobal valley betweenthe Rockiesandthe Pacific Ocean .OnSeptember271847theyreachedthe Columbia River about 25 miles northwestofPortlandand plantedstrengthenedropedsalong its banks to provideammunition againstIndianattacks .During their threemonth journey they discovered many new places including Whatcom Canyon where they built Fort Nisqually to protect their supply train from Indian raiding .They also found sections of Today’s Yakima River system that were never recognized by Europeans as being significant water sources
