In 1835, prospectors discovered gold on the banks of the river and quickly became mad over it because they believed that everyone would find it because there had been no previous discovery like this in their area! The first mill in town was built by John Sutter in 1853 and continued to be run until 1912 when it caught fire and destroyed most of it; however, a portion was rebuilt and still operates today as a shopping mall called "The Commons." In 1899, local entrepreneur Cornelius Vanderbilt bought three parcels of land along both sides of the river for $2 million dollars ($ as of 2019) making Klamath Falls one of his largest investments ever! He named his new development "Downtown", after his personal home on Fifth Avenue New York City (then known as Dutch Kills). During World War II many people worked at Defense Plant No. 6 near Fort Bragg (now Donner Ranch), northwest of downtown Klamath Falls. This plant produced plutonium for nuclear weapons research during World War II but never went into production due to enemy bombings that struck nearby towns shortly before its completion in 1945; instead all plutonium produced at Donner Ranch was used to make milk pails for dairy farmers back east! During World War II, Klamath Falls played a significant role in serving as an airfield for both Pacific Air Force bombers flying missions over Japan and AmericanAAF planes flying European air patrols over Nazi Germany. After the war ended, much of what remain of downtown Klamath Falls were abandoned when highway construction resumed in postwar years. However, some efforts have been made to revive downtown activity including hosting arts events and creating new streetscape features such as an open-air marketplace called "The Square." Despite this progress, most aspects of downtown are still considered inactive today.
In 1864, the Klamath Falls column of the Mount St. Helens eruption occurred, and a powerful earthquake followed. The destruction caused by this event was extensive, and the town of Klamath Falls was never the same.
