In 1925, when Oregon became an independent state, Klamath Falls became its capital city and has remained so ever since. Today, much of what makes Klamath Falls such a unique place has come from its location on top of Mount Shasta. This mountain dominates much of the townscape and can be seen from most parts of it - even down to intersections! The views are simply stunning and make for an excellent day or walk around town. In addition to Mount Shasta (which can also be seen from many places within town), other attractions include nearby highways 10 and 97 - both which run through central Klamath Falls - as well as several smaller lakes and ponds close by. It is located on the Klamath River and near its confluence with the Willamette River. The first people to live here were the Siskiyou Band of Indians in what is now downtown Klamath Falls. They built their village on top of an old Native American trading post called Treaty Rock. In 1847, the U.S. military founded Fort Reuben here after defeated Native Americans inbattle at Siletz Bayou near present-day Portland. The fort was named for General John Reuben Cooke of Virginia who had commanded Ulysses S Grant's army during the Mexican–American War and also served as a member of President James Polk's Board of Trade in 1846-48. In 1859, when gold was discovered near Mynnville in what is now Tillamook County, miners from nearby Butte Mines started traveling to Klamath Falls to pick it up and bring it back to town for processing into coins and jewelry that would become part of America's early economy. By 1862, there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Klamath Falls with over 1,000 residents! By 1880, many small businesses had replaced larger ones as mining declined while other industries such as agriculture grew around townspeople like Caryl Fenton Millinery and Laundry Company who raised chickens and hogs on their land east of downtown; Alexander & Son Grain Elevator which output flour into northeast California; Jordon Glass Works which made shatterproof windows; Wagon Wheel Inn operated by George Carrington who ran a millinery store next door until 1886 when he sold it to his son Harry; Hotel Cascade opened in 1906 and became one of THE most popular hotels in Oregon with its unique architecture going down in history Klamath Falls saw an influx of new people during World War II as veterans returned home from service across the Pacific Ocean . After VE Day (END OF WORLD WAR II) local companies like Mattress Firm (now Macy’s), Ford Motor Company Truck Assembly Plant and Kaiser Aluminum Corporation built or renovated numerous factories throughout town including Columbia Arms Ammunition Plant which produced thousands of rounds per day for soldiers fighting overseas; Lewis Aircraft Manufacturing Company manufactured B-25 bombers for United StatesAAF during WWII TodayKlamath Falls remains an important center for commerce with its many local businesses but also sees growth due to sister cities relationships formed through Sister Cities USA program . Klamath Falls is a city in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The history of the city dates back to 1847 when Canadian miner and fur trader George Vancouver founded a small town called "Nimbus" on the banks of the Klamath River in present-day Nisqually County. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location near trade routes and water resources. By 1872, Nimbus had a population of over 100 people and was one of several towns in what is now Klamath Falls Township. In 1876, after being passed through by U.S. President James K. Polk on his way to Asia, Nimbus became part of what is now Oregon Territory as part of Treaty No.. 10 between Great Britain and America following their war with Mexico; this gave rise to social tensions within the community which led to violence and expulsion from Nimbus in 1877-78 by members of an angry mob led by local rancher John Shields Sr.. In 1880, local pioneer Simeon Wheeler settled in what is now downtown Klamath Falls; he started a flour mill which quickly became one of the largest producers in central Oregon; Wheeler also donated land for public square/avenue (now Main Street) and built a schoolhouse which still stands today. On November 3rd, 1889, Boston Post store owner Halsey Denny opened his first store in downtown Klamath Falls - it was the first business west of Interstate 5! At that time there were only two telephone lines in central Oregon - one from Seattle and another from Portland! A year later – October 1890 – Wm E Stryker opened his first restaurant west of I-5 - it was located at 401 Main Street! After years filled with growth & progress - including numerous natural disasters such as devastating floods along both sides of the river during winter 1906-07 & 1910-11 – came World War II: The entire town was evacuated for six weeks during February 1945 due to an estimated 1000000 Swedish troops stationed at nearby Pendleton Manzanar Airfield; however no damage or casualties occurred thankfully! During post-war reconstruction efforts many businesses closed down including Wm E Stryker’s restaurant but soon enough they reopened under new ownership - this time providing hope for revitalization throughout central Oregon! Today’s downtown area provides beautiful architecture dating back to early 20th century examples like Pritchett’s Block (1895), American Legion Hall (1907), Episcopal Church (1915), Masonic Temple (1920) as well as more recent buildings like Main Street Bank (2006) & KOIN 6 News building (2013).
