Klamath Falls, Oregon is a small city located in Klamath County, Oregon, on the north bank of the Klamath River. The population was 13,000 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland–Vancouver–Hillsboro, OR-WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Klamath Falls" comes from two words: Klamph (a place) and fall (a natural event). The falls are located just east of downtown and can be seen from a variety of places in town. They are considered to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in North America. The first Europeans to visit Klamath Falls were members ofCaptain Cook's First Fleet who sailed upriver on their way to China in 1768. In 1825 John McLoughlin built a ferry across the river for wagon traffic between Portland and Fort Hall. He also built a store and hotel which remain today as part of the downtown core. In 1846 Jens Christensen arrived here with his family from Denmark and startedocuson agriculture around what is now known as Hansen Rancho range Road #2 about 4 miles south of town on Umatilla Creek. From this point on, Christensen began developing what became one of Oregon's largest ranches including areas near present day Hingham and Sandy Rivers as well as much land further downriver including present day Klamath Falls proper. He also founded Cascades College in 1851 which still exists today as Pacific Lutheran University - Klamath Falls Campus

Klamath Falls, Oregon is a town located in the Klamath River Valley of southern Oregon. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. The name means "place where the clams grow." The first Europeans to visit this area were prospectors who discovered gold and silver in 1851-52. In 1862, U.S. Army General George Custer led an expedition into the Klamath River Valley in search of his lost commando unit, the 7th Cavalry Regiment. After finding no sign of them, Custer decided to ford the river and return home without spending any more time in this remote region. In 1863, a group of Mormon settlers from Salt Lake City moved downriver to what is now Klamath Falls. They began growing potatoes and other vegetables as part of their farmstead until 1868 when they abandoned it due to a freeze that winter. The community was founded on December 12th that year by Jerald Ewing and John Ayrton with aid from Brigham Young’s organically managed works gang known as “The First Utah Battalion” (later called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). From its earliest days, Klamath Falls had been an agricultural center with growers of produce such as apples, grapes, onions, potatoes and tomatoes doing business out of their homes or barns on exposed high ground overlooking the river valley below. By 1905 there were over fifty businesses established hereabouts including two grocery stores (the first open in 1886), three post office buildings (1892), six banks (1904) and thirteen schools leading to full enrollment in 1916 with one hundred students graduating from ten schools! One such early pioneer was Mrs. Ada Sibley who settled here around 1865 driving her wagonload of goods upriver on horseback during what is now known as “The Great Freeze” that winter resulting in much perishable foodstuff being carried off by snowmobile! Her white oxen pulled her wagonloads all along the way unloading at night near present day Klondike Park! Today you can find bits and pieces thereof still scattered throughout deep snow drifts all around her old camping grounds just east side Of town off US 120 North towards Buttes
