The population was 20,674 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Klamath Falls were fur traders and missionaries who came down the Columbia River in 1825. They named it "Fort George" after General George Washington's Army Headquarters on Mount Vernon near Georgetown, Virginia. A post office was established at Fort George in 1827, but it soon became too small for the growing community and was moved to present-day Klamath Falls. In 1875, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near present day Butte and recommended that miners be sent down to find it. The US Geological Survey organized a group of men led by Captain Folsom to prospect for gold at this location. By 1880, over twenty men had arrived and started shoveling dirt into an assay ground which they christened "Gleason's Mill". On December 6th of that year (1880),Captain Folsom presented Prospector C S Gleason with a gold piece as a Thank you Present from his customers for their faithfulness while prospecting hereabouts! This event kickstarted what would become known as "The Gold Rush." The townspeople quickly built frame houses out of logs they gathered from nearby riverside forests and set about building roads and stores. In 1893, they voted to move the county seat from Thompsonville to Klamath Falls because it seemed more convenient than staying where they were surrounded byThompsonville people who didn't want them there or who thought they were stealing their land! The arrival of railroad service made life much easier for people living outside of downtown Klamath Falls - until 1951 when Amtrak began running passenger trains through town stopping only at Cannon Beach on one leg before continuing on upriver again! The first European to visit the area was Captain George Vancouver in 1792, and he named the falls after his friend and neighbor, Klamath Chief Kitimat. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order creating a new district known as Oregon Territory. The order placed much of present-day Oregon within this territory including parts of present-day Klamath Falls and other areas near the falls. The original mission at Fort Vancouver was renamed Fort Hall during this time period in honor of Maine State Senator John A. Alford (D-Portland). The fall season in 1860–61 led to large quantities of gold being discovered near Bend, Oregon by prospectors led by James Waddell on what is now called Waddell's Gulch Road. This discovery led to widespread speculation about gold Fever throughout western North America and increased activity around Klamath Falls due to news reports from across the continent. By 1861, over 1,000 men were working at various gold mines in central California trying to find enough money to finance their exploration campaigns; only a fraction returned with any significant amount of gold or silver! Some residents disapproved of these miners coming into their community without permission or warning; some even fought back against government forces that had come to arrest them for Treasure Hunting purposes along with many others who had nothing better to do thanBritish Columbia! A local militia group known as "The Gros Ventre" assisted United States troops during these events; they were eventually able to quash most resistance before it could become too costly or dangerous for either side involved.} In 1865 Congress passed legislation authorizing Governor Isaac Stevens (D-Oregon)to establish a school system within Oregon Territory which would provide education for Native Americans living east of Interstate 5 alongwith white children living west of I-5.} This act also included funds necessary for construction of schools and other infrastructure within eastern Oregon} In 1867, Stevens ordered all Native Americans living eastof I-5 be relocated west towards present day Madras where they would receive educational opportunities while still retaining their traditional cultural practices.}
