Klamath Falls, Oregon is a small town located in the Klamath Mountains of southeastern Oregon. The community was founded in 1859 by pioneers form the Rogue Valley region and was named for the Klamath River. The population of Klamath Falls peaked at 5,000 in 1930 but has since declined to about 1,500 people. The history of Klamath Falls goes back to 1849 when prospectors from nearby Bend found evidence of gold deposits in what is now called Rogue Valley. In 1860, John Marshall erected a cabin on the banks of the river and began exploration for gold. After several years of unsuccessful efforts, Marshall decided to build a fortification on his property to protect himself and his men from Native American raiders. He named the fort "Fort McDowell" after General Lewis McDowell who had fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1870, two more prospectors discovered gold near present-day Klamath Falls. However, it wasn't until 1880 that first steps were made towards developing this new find into a town. A group of farmers along with local ranchers purchased land east of town from Marshall and developed it into farmland that today constitutes much of downtown Klamath Falls." In 1875, sawmill owner James Waddell donated land upstream from downtown for an addition to his mill which would become one of the most significant elements in downtown development. Waddell also built a school and store on his property which became known as Waddellsville after him. By 1890, there were over 20 businesses operating in downtown Klamaths Falls with 100 residents living there." In 1924, Harry Hargrave constructed an airfield within city limits which served as primary commercial airport for southeast Oregon until 1943 when Portland International Airport opened . In 1948 Rte 9 was improved allowing easy access to Interstate 5 so growth increased significantly outside OFHEWA while central business district gradually shrunk." In 1984 Mayor Tom Fitton persuaded county commissioners to allow annexation by Portland so that Downtown could be redeveloped into single family housing following the failed attempt by entrepreneur Donny Sorenson to develop an urban center adjacent to I-5." Today Klamaths falls remains very rural with few services available outside its borders making it difficult for people like myself who wantto experience all that this small town has to offer (elevation sickness etc).
