Keizer is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Keizer River about 20 miles southeast of Portland. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 34 people. The name "Keizer" was given to the community by George Washington and his party as they traveled through what is now Oregon in 1792 while exploringthe area for potential sites for a new capital of the United States. The first post office in Keizer was established on August 5, 1864, and opened with nine mailbags from Portland. The town’s first store was built in 1865 by John Fenton and featured a wagon wheel drive garage and an oven that produced bread made from cornmeal, flour, salt and water. In 1886, whenPortland became the state capital, Keizer became part of that city until it was annexed by Portland on February 3, 1898. A dam across the Keiser River created Pool Dam #1 in 1927 which also served as the town’s water supply until 1935 when an underground pipeline was constructed to bring freshwater into town from Lake Oswego northwest of Portland. In 1951 residents voted to change their name to Salem after becoming aware of their similarity to Salem, Oregon then home to both cities with populations over 100,000 each before they were merged into Portland on January 1st 1959 Oregon State University (OSU) moved from Laney Field east campus into what is now downtown Keizer in 1961 OSU's current Main Campus building began construction in 1969 adjacent to PSU's old Science Center at NW First Avenue and Couch Road
