Keizer is a town in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. It was founded by John Keizer and named for him. The population was 1,878 at the 2000 census. The ZIP code for Keizer is 97441. The first townsite in what is now Keizer were two small log settlements established about 1875 on the east side of the Willamette River where it empties into the Columbia River. One settlement was called "Moses," after Moses Chilton who had homesteaded there in 1868; the other was called "Keiser." John Keizer settled on land he purchased from Yaqui Indian Chief Josephine Robillard in 1876. He built a cabin and Hereford horse farm near present-day Daylesmith before moving to his permanent home at Mound Valley in 1880. In 1893 he donated land to build an elementary school and vocational training school which became known as Oregon State University and remain so to this day. In 1907, when Clackamas County was created from parts of Multnomah and Clackamas Counties, Keizer became part of that county. As part of its consolidation with other counties within Oregon State University's boundaries (including Beaverton), Keizer annexed Halliwell Township in 1938 followed by Waverly Township that same year. In 1951, Slatkin Park incorporated as a village within Keizers limits following approval by the Village Council; however, Slatkin Park never achieved township status because it lacked proper zoning laws until 1978 when they were amended retroactively to include all unincorporated areas within its borders including those located adjacent to Slatkin Park through annexation of surrounding properties including Butte Creek Rancho Seco between 2004-2007 which has since reverted back under federal ownership - making this area once again considered part ofKeizers municipal limits). It wasn't until 1979 that voters approved incorporation of Alderwood Township adjacent to Seagull Point Marina despite objections from residents there over development plans for their community which would have included an open-air shopping mall anchored by Sears & JCPenney stores along with boat ramp, marinas and homesIf successful Alderwood would have been the second city entirelywithin university boundaries after Eugene
Keizer was founded in 1857 by George Keizer and his brother John. The town was named after landowner John Keiser, who donated the land for the community. The first store was built in 1858. In 1860, the Oregon Territorial Legislature approved a townsite charter for Keizer, which became effective on July 1, 1860. By 1865, there were nine businesses in Keizer. In 1867, Keizer had a population of sixty-three people and two stores. On February 26 of that year, an act to establish a school district within the territorial government was passed and signed by Governor Arthur O'Laughlin. The school district opened on March 3rd with forty students from four families. In 1870, an addition to the town square was constructed and dedicated as the first public library in Oregon. A post office operated from 1870 to 1881; it was renamed the Portland Mail Post Office in 1886 because of its new location at Fourth Avenue and Hastings Street near downtown Portland.
