Keizer is a small town located in the Klamath Mountains of Oregon. The Keizer population was estimated at only around 1,000 people in 1990, but has since grown to over 10,000 residents. The town was named for John C. Keizer, who served as Mayor from 1892-1894 and 1896-1898. The first settlers arrived in what is now Keizer in 1851. At the time it was an area known as "The Prairie." The land was purchased by David Farnsworth and his family and they started farming there. By 1880, the population of Keizer had increased to about fifty people. In 1890, John C. Keiser became Mayor of Keizer after serving three terms on the Town Council. In 1898 he also served as County Commissioner for Klamath County and helped raise money to build a county courthouse and jail building in downtownKeizer. He died suddenly two years later at the age of seventy-sixth birthday; his wife followed him into death soon afterwards at age seventy-eight years old.
The first white person to live in Keizer was A.J. Freeman, who came to the area in 1887. The town was founded by Alvah Dickinson and Wm. Barnes, both Native Americans, in 1885 as a way to trade with the Yakima tribe. The post office was established in 1889, and the first store opened in 1889. In 1906, the Keizer School District was created, and the first school opened in 1909.
