Keizer is a city in Keizer County, Oregon, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Keizer County. The first European to visit the area that became Keizer was Captain James Cook on his mapping mission in 1778. He named it "Eagle's Rock," after his ship, the Eagle, which he sighted near this location on 8 October 1778. The first permanent settler in what is now Keizer County was George Atwater in 1855. George Atwater built a log cabin at what is now known as uppermost bluff east of town on 3 July 1855. In 1856, John McLoughlin arrived with his family and began building a house and store on what would become McLoughlin's Hill west of town; he naming it "McLoughlin's Hill." In 1861, Elijah Brough erected a stagecoach stop called "Brough's Station" about two miles southeast of town on Oregon Road 12S (now Oregon Route 97). About 1870, Eli Lilly & Co.'s depot was built about one mile northwest of town along Oregon Route 97; it was renamed "Keiser Depot" when liquor sales were made available for service from this site beginning in 1875. A post office called "Keiser" was established at this location on 1 October 1886; it continued to be used until January 1907 when it changed its name to "Lake Oswego". In 1908–09, an act by the State Legislature created Lake Oswego Township within Keizer County and ordered all township offices moved to the new township headquarters Building located south of Main Street between Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue in 1909. On 5 May 1912 Keizer City Council adopted Resolution No. 6 asking for annexation by Lake Oswego Township; this request was granted effective 15 June 1912 and Keizer became part of Lake Oswego Township. On 10 November 1916 KEIZER incorporation papers were filed with the Secretary of State listing 7362 people living therein as against 5479 residents residing within Lake Oswego Township at that time therefore making KEIZEROregon’s second largest city! As more businesses opened up throughoutOregon during World War I resulting in an increase in populationKEIZER reached its current size with over 9000 residents by 1920! After years of growth and development KEIZER achieved statehood as part of Oregon on 14 February 1958 becoming “the first city ever incorporated into any U .S . state”! After decades serving as both county seat and economic center for surrounding rural areas KEIZER experienced rapid growth following its incorporation ontostatehood day which saw an influx Of nearly 10 thousand residents into its boundaries!
