Keizer was founded in 1876 by James Keizer and his brother John. The first store in the town was built on the current site of the Oregon Zoo. In 1880, James Keizer married Emma Laughlin and the couple moved to Portland. In 1881, they opened a second store in downtown Portland. In 1886, they started a grocery store and later moved to a larger building on Third Street. In 1896, they became part of the Oregon Manufacturing Company and changed their name to Keizer-Laughlin company. The company Textile Division produced clothing for national retailers such as Macy's and Sears Roebuck. The company closed its doors in 1966 after years of decline.
