Keizer is a small town in Oregon, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Keizer was Captain John McLoughlin in 1825 on his way from California to trade with the local Indians. He named it after Frederik de Vries, Governor of Java in Indonesia. On July 4, 1847, Keizer's first post office opened with twenty five mailbags sent by James Halsey, Commodore of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and brother of Rear Admiral George Farragut who had commanded the warshipship USS " Constitution" during the Mexican–American War and won fame as a naval commander during that conflict. In 1873, Jules Ferry founded Oregon City which became known as Oregon City because it had been approved by Congress as the new seat of government for Multnomah County (later renamed Portland) when that territory was organized from parts of Clackamas and Jefferson counties on January 3, 1871 under Act No. 10 of 1870. In 1906 Oregon voters passed an act authorizing entry into private possession any agricultural land lying within one thousand feet (300 meters) west or east of a public road or street leading thereto; this legislation saw Keizer becoming an important center for agriculture with its own municipally owned irrigation systems and feedlots necessary to support high animal production rates mandated by state law at that time Oregon's involvement in World War I interrupted agriculture but led to increased demand for military munitions made in nearby states such as aluminum processing plants set up near Madras and Corvallis while other industries such as trucking grew rapidly around Keizer thanks to advances in transportation technology including tracks built over previously unproductive hillsides The 1920s were better years for Keizer with constructionbeginning on several large industrial projects including two cement plants (the Northrop Plant and Canwest Plant), a paperboard plant (Furniture Mfg., Inc.), a poultry hatchery (Ayers Poultry Co.), an auto dealership/mobile home park (Moses Wagon Wheel Park), and housing developments such as Winthrop Place which still stands today . much later also steel mills were constructed at Hope Mills near Peace River then Selma Steel near present day Springfield . although not all these projects came to fruition due largely to competing interests among developers All told there are numerous examples throughout history where communities have overcome initial opposition or limitations through economic development
The first Europeans to visit Keizer were the Spanish in 1778. The first permanent settlers in the area were the Hayden family, who arrived in 1851. The town was named after John C. Hayden, director of the Oregon Trail and one of the original pioneers in Oregon.
